In 1967, M.E. was born in Charleston, South Carolina. The first of 3 kids, she learned quickly that she loved sunshine, traveling with her military dad and creative mom, and clothes! In 1977, M.E.'s sister Blue was born on the tropical island of Okinawa. A few months later, the sisters, along with mom, dad, and brother Donald, moved to sunny Florida.
In Florida, M.E. did the usual…went to school, studied hard, traveled abroad, and tried to look like Madonna as often as possible. Younger sister Blue was still in school, raiding M.E.'s closet, taking dance lessons, and scouting out fashion trends with M.E. at the local malls and thrift stores. "Someday I'm going to name a boutique after the two of us," M.E. promised sister Blue.
In 1985, M.E. got her first job in fashion, a minimum wage job at Ivey's Department store! She learned about designer clothes, accessories, and that she truly loved fashion. This was the era of parachute pants, day-glow earrings, the Thompson Twins, and how to leave the house in an outfit that mom found acceptable. She kept working at Ivey's, even when she went away to school at Florida State University.
In 1990, M.E. moved to New York City. The opportunities came her way, working for jewelry designers like Erwin Pearl, handling big sales at Banana Republic on Lexington Avenue, selling her own jewelry at the Columbus Avenue flea market, and managing the first Mimi Maternity store in Manhattan.
That same year, Blue moved from her beloved Florida to Saudi Arabia with the family. She would spend the next 6 years abroad in school. Her love of travel and living abroad was born.
In 1995, M.E. moved to Philadelphia, PA to eventually become the Director of Communications for Mothers Work, Inc. With over 400 stores at the time, it was a fun, creative job in a bustling buying, retail, and manufacturing office.
In 2000, M.E. decided that it was time to realize her dream…she opened up her own boutique, named after herself and sister Blue as promised. The initial concept was a mixture of fashionable vintage and resale clothing as well as groovy accessories.
In the meantime, sister Blue graduated from the University of Florida with a BFA in pottery.
In 2001, as the the boutique grew, M.E. started to phase out the resale clothing and add new, fun lines that came from places like LA and NYC, to even Paris and India. In addition, M.E. began adding in her own vintage picks from places like the Montreuil market in Paris, retirement communities in Florida, to sleepy plains towns in Oklahoma.
That same year, Blue moved to Ireland to apprentice in the tiny art town of Thomastown.
In 2003, M.E. began to realize that women needed clothing that she couldn't find out in the market…so she started making her own skirts! The ME & Blue A-line skirt collection was launched, fitting XS to XL women perfectly!
In the meantime, bohemian sister Blue was still working on her pottery career, teaching people on cruise ships in places from Costa Rica to Alaska how to bring out their own inner Piccasso.
In 2004, M.E. launched the ME & Blue skirt line to other fabulous
boutiques like Leehe Fai in Philadelphia and Tia's Place in Jersey
City, NJ!
In 2005, M.E. was itching for a change and had dreams of spending more time in a sunnier, warmer climate! California was calling and she spent a month out there, checking out the fashion scene in LA and thinking of what her next move would be...In the meantime, she was still designing the ME & Blue line of skirts!
In 2006, M.E. decided to close the Old City boutique at the end of July and work on moving the ME & Blue brand to Los Angeles, California. M.E. is now in the process of working on the move to LA where she will design the ME & Blue line of skirts, work on the MEandBlue.com web store, and wholesale the line across the USA!
...stay tuned for details!
FYI - Mom, Dad, and brother Donald still live in sunny Florida. Blue now lives in Asheville, North Carolina, and has long since retired from her pottery career. She now styles hair at the groovy Beauty Parade salon in Asheville.
M.E. and Blue talk on the phone everyday about life, fashion, love, and to give each other encouragement during these fun & fabulous times of change!
